James Turrell's 2020 'Constellation', in three parts 'Sagittarius', 'Cassiopeia', 'Pegasus' is a continuation of Turrell's long-standing exploration of the perception of light and the influence it can have on ones sensory experiences.
'Constellation' is an installation that transforms the environment through a sophisticated play of light, creating an immersive experience for viewers. The manipulation of light and colour across the three works invites viewers to engage with the piece on a deeply personal level. Offering a sense of otherworldliness and introspection, with viewers engaging with one piece alone, or collectively as a trio.
The installation blurs the boundaries between physical and perceived space, encouraging viewers to question their perceptions and experience the subtle nuances of light. As with much of Turrell's work, 'Constellation' endeavours to create a physical presence through a visual and 'seen' form. This offers a contemplative escape into a world of light and it's infinite possibilities.

The brief of this assignment was to explore how colour, light and pattern presented it's self in 3-dimensional forms when manipulated and curated in a confined space. Taking from the Greek myth of 'Pandora's Box', we were tasked to explore, like the opening of Pandora’s box, how we could create a 3-dimensional outcome that had the possibilities to extend into the 4th.
Given Turrell as a precedent, I researched many of his works. However was most drawn to 'Constellation', his 2020 work exhibited at the Pace Gallery in London . The work has an allure that expands beyond your physical presence, like mentioned above, I found the work to transport me, both mind and body. I wanted to continue this exploration and saw an opportunity to extend upon Turrell's concepts through my assignment brief.
This sparked a personal interest in how light could be absorbed and or re-directed across shapes, contrary to the light being dispersed and assessed from the shape, like that of Turrell's work. So forth was my concept of 'Constellation through Pandora's Box', three boxes that intimately explored light, colour and pattern, and additionally, my hopes the unknown.
